Interlinking with Optimized Anchor Text

The anchor text is the clickable text part of a hyperlink. For instance, the code

<a href="http://www.example.com">Anchor text</a>

Would look like

Anchor text

when published to the Web. That visible, clickable text is the anchor text, and it gives a cue to the search engine about the subject matter that will be found on the page that the text links to.

Fortunately, you’ve already built out your keyword map, so you already know the subject and target keyword phrases for each page of your site. In other words, you already know what anchor text you should be using to link to each page of your site.

Look at the content of each of your pages. When you find yourself referring to topics that are covered in more depth on other pages, link to the other pages using anchor text – the anchor text should be the target keyword phrases for the destination page.

Also, don’t link out to other sites or pages with anchor text that is the targeted keyword phrase for the current page. For example, if you’re writing content for your Blue Widgets page and you want to link out to another page or website that is a good resource for your viewers, don’t use “Blue Widgets” as the anchor text for that link.
